Art: Non-Zero Sum at Museum Gallery/Gallery Museum

By Matt Morris

Museum Gallery/Gallery Museum’s next exhibition, Non-Zero Sum, features one of the collective’s own members, Reid Radcliffe, alongside Jeremy Flick, an artist who now lives in Maryland but studied at the University of Cincinnati. For several years, Flick has been working with the patterning found inside security envelopes, isolating these blue grids, plaids and checks to be seen in a lineage of pattern painting and other tropes in abstract painting’s history. Cool in temperament and smartly presented, these abstract paintings, drawings and other visual solutions are weighty with meaning from their source. Once informed of the origin of these seemingly decorative patterns, they allude to interpersonal and social problems of privacy and trust. The exhibition continues through Aug. 20. Museum Gallery is located at 1218 Sycamore St., Over-the-Rhine.

Opening Reception: Friday August 6, 2010  6pm-11pm

The title, non-zero-sum, is taken from game theory, a branch of applied mathematics, which attempts to capture behavior in types of strategic situations where the idea of a "game" is used to isolate features of decision-making, particularly when those decisions are social.  It is commonly used to illustrate human relationships in economics, political science, and international relations.  Non-zero-sum refers to a particular type of game in which the gain of one player does not necessarily correspond to the lose by another player.  Emerging out of our friendship, dialogues, debates, critiques and numerous games of chess, the exhibition is centered around creating a curatorial game-like-situation in which Reid and I  combine two concurrent solo shows of recent works into a singular exhibition.  The aim is  not directly on the idea of a collaboration but instead to explore both new and unexpected dialogues between our works, which differ but are loosely connected in terms of our interest in collecting and the re-representation of objects commonly disvalued or overlooked.  Much of the work will be created site-specifically.  We will also have an opportunity for the general public to offer thoughts and ideas as well  to participate in the curatorial game prior to its official opening during the Artist Talk/Exhibition Preview Thursday, August 5 at 7pm.  The Opening Reception will be held Friday, August 6, 2010 from 6pm-11pm.

My work is featured in the recent publication THE SADAT LECTURES : Words and Images on Peace, 1997-2008

The Sadat Lectures is a compilation of thought-provoking speeches delivered by some of the most accomplished practitioners of international relations: Ezer Weizman, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, George Mitchell, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Mary Robinson, James Baker, and Mohamed ElBaradei.

The Sadat Lecture was inaugurated in 1997 when the Sadat Chair for Peace and Development was established at the University of Maryland. This series of lectures explores the role of leadership in the pursuit of peace, as exemplified by the life and vision of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. Organized by Shibley Telhami, the first and current Sadat Chair, the lectures span a decade of tumultuous change in the Middle East and provide an enlightening interpretation of a transformative period in the relationship between the Middle East and the rest of the world.

Accompanying these speeches are full-color reproductions of winning artwork from the Sadat Art for Peace Award. This competition is held in conjunction with the Sadat Lecture for Peace at the University of Maryland and recognizes the best artwork depicting the theme of peace and reconciliation.
